Welcome and Keynote Presentations: Perspectives in Practice: Creating Better High Schools

This session officially welcomed participants to the National High School Center’s Summer Institute. In addition, the session highlighted two successful practitioners, Molly Howard, Principal of Jefferson County High School and the 2008 NASSP/MetLife High School Principal of the Year, and Lewis H. Chappelear, Teacher at James Monroe High School and 2008 California Teacher of the Year and 2008 National Teacher of the Year Finalist.  Both Molly and Lewis shared concrete strategies used to improve high school education.

Representing the practitioner's perspective, Lewis Chappelear discussed his role as a teacher in transforming classroom practice and engaging students in the learning process.
