New! Enhanced Early Warning System Tool v2.0 and Supporting Resources

EWS DataEarlier this fall, the National High School Center released its Early Warning System (EWS) Tool v2.0 as well as an Early Warning System Implementation Guide. The EWS Tool v2.0, a free Microsoft Excel-based program, is a redesigned and enhanced adaptation of the National High School Center’s original Early Warning System Tool v1.0 released in 2008.

The EWS Tool v2.0 relies on readily available student-level data (attendance, course failures, GPA, and credit accumulation) that are entered or imported by schools, districts, or states at regular intervals. The tool automatically calculates research-based indicators to identify students who are at risk for dropping out of high school. It is currently being implemented in schools, districts, and states across the country.

Since the release of the EWS Tool v2.0, the National High School Center has made available a few additional resources to support its implementation:

  • Archived "Early Warning System Tool v2.0 Webinar"
This Webinar, presented October 19, 2010, featured Susan Bowles Therriault and Mindee O’Cummings from the National High School Center, who reviewed the research used to develop and inform the EWS Tool v2.0 and demonstrated the new functions of the enhanced tool.
  • Data Source File Templates
The EWS Tool v2.0 features the new capability of being able to import student data from existing data systems. Data source file templates are provided both as files pre-loaded with sample data that can be used to preview how the tool works, and as empty files formatted for easy input of your school’s data.

The EWS Tool v2.0 and resources, archived Webinar, and source file templates are available on the National High School Center’s Web site.

School Improvement Grants and High Schools

SIG chartThe Title I School Improvement Grants (SIGs) represent one funding stream under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) intended to address the needs of the nation’s most persistently low-performing schools. SIG funding presents a unique opportunity for states in the U.S. to direct resources toward the improvement of schools and to ensure that more students graduate with a high school diploma than ever before.

The National High School Center has created a Tracking Table of SIG Awards to States and Local Education Agencies (LEAs) to help them as they explore options for transforming low-performing high schools. The table includes statistics on the number of eligible high schools, links to LEA applications, and the number of high schools funded. States will need to support their LEAs’ high school improvement efforts by providing a vision and goals for schools, creating enabling conditions for transformative change, sustaining implementation over time, and building long-term capacity for continued improvement.

More information and additional resources on high school SIG are available on our Web site and blog.
